Background of the Study
Community elders in Afikpo South have long been regarded as custodians of oral traditions and local archaeological knowledge. Their narratives, passed down through generations, offer invaluable insights into past societal norms, rituals, and historical events (Uche, 2023). These oral accounts complement material evidence recovered from archaeological sites, collectively forming a rich tapestry of cultural memory. Recent interdisciplinary studies have highlighted the importance of integrating oral traditions with archaeological data to reconstruct historical events more holistically (Okafor, 2024). Elders’ testimonies often serve as primary sources that help validate and contextualize excavated artifacts, thereby bridging the gap between scientific inquiry and indigenous knowledge systems (Ifeoma, 2025). Despite their critical role, the contributions of community elders remain under-documented and undervalued in formal archaeological research. This study seeks to evaluate how the active participation of elders can enhance the preservation of both oral and material heritage, ensuring that the cultural legacy of Afikpo South is sustained for future generations.

Statement of the Problem
There is a growing disconnect between formal archaeological practices and the preservation of indigenous oral traditions in Afikpo South. The undervaluation of community elders’ testimonies has led to gaps in the historical narrative, resulting in a fragmented understanding of local heritage. Limited documentation and the marginalization of traditional knowledge contribute to this challenge. The study aims to address these issues by critically assessing the role of community elders in maintaining and transmitting archaeological knowledge and oral traditions (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the role of community elders in preserving oral traditions.

  2. To document indigenous narratives related to archaeological sites.

  3. To integrate oral traditions with archaeological data for holistic heritage preservation.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the role of community elders in preserving local oral traditions?

  2. How do these traditions complement archaeological findings?

  3. What mechanisms can enhance the integration of oral and material heritage?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Community elders significantly contribute to the preservation of oral traditions.

  2. Indigenous narratives enhance the interpretation of archaeological data.

  3. Collaborative approaches improve overall heritage preservation.

Significance of the Study
This study emphasizes the critical role of community elders in safeguarding cultural memory and archaeological knowledge. The research findings will promote integrative preservation methods that combine indigenous wisdom with scientific practices, benefiting cultural institutions, policymakers, and heritage practitioners in Ebonyi State (Ijeoma, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is confined to the role of community elders in preserving oral traditions and archaeological knowledge in Afikpo South Local Government Area, without exploring similar practices in other regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Oral Traditions: Culturally transmitted narratives and historical accounts.

  2. Archaeological Knowledge: Information derived from material culture and excavations.

  3. Custodianship: The responsibility of preserving and transmitting cultural heritage.
